Marine transportation of dangerous goods is performed by the vessels that have clearance to this type of transportation. A special mark that is put in the Clearance Certificate while presentation of the vessel to the Maritime Register of Shipping proves the clearance. Some requirements such as vessel preparation (cargo hold cleaning, technical condition diagnostics and crew briefing) are applied to this type of vessels.
Goods shall be deemed dangerous if, without adherence to special cargo transportation conditions and necessary packing (container), they can damage nature and human life. The packing used for dangerous goods must be hermetically sealed, strength and reliability tested. A special mark to warn of danger is applied on the cargo container.
Dangerous goods transportation on marine vessels is subject to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL).
